There’s a photo on my phone that I can’t stop looking at. Two boys, aged seventeen and fourteen, repairing a bicycle that has been donated to our Dream Hub at Lifesong Kenya. One holds a tire lever like he’s done it a thousand times. The other watches with an intensity that says, “I’m next.” This is a beautiful interaction that we are witnessing during our bicycle repair program.
Six months ago, neither had repaired anything more complex than patching up a torn school notebook. Today, they’re diagnosing punctures, patching tubes, and—more importantly—teaching each other. And what’s more, they are gaining aand building trust among each other. If you have ever taken your bicycle for repairs at a bicycle mechanic shop, you know the importance of trust.
This is what we mean when we say we don’t rescue youth.

Bicycle Repair Program Lessons
The flat tire took twenty minutes to fix. The lesson it delivered will outlast the bike itself. When a young man is handed a real tool and trusted to fix a real problem, something fundamental shifts. He stops seeing himself as someone who needs fixing or saving. He starts seeing himself as an important problem-solver. This realization is a game changer.
We’ve watched this transformation repeat across our Dream Hub, which is a sacred place under a tree. Boys who arrive from the community withdrawn now hold their heads high. Boys who struggled with patience now methodically work through complex repairs. It is remarkeable seeing boys who never had a consistent adult in their lives now have mentors who remember their names, their progress, their potential.
But here’s what keeps me awake: for every Brayo and Chris in our program, there are ten more waiting outside our door. Waiting for a bicycle repair toolkit. Waiting for a mentor who shows up weekly, not just once. Waiting for someone to look them in the eye and say, “I believe you can figure this out.”
