RESTORING DIGNITY • ACCOUNTABILITY • RELATIONSHIPS

Helping Boys to Take Responsibility

When a boy comes into conflict and contact with the law, punishment alone does not address his circumstances, relationships, mistakes and patterns that contributed to the harm.

Lifesong Kenya works with boys who are in conflict with the law to support their healing, accountability, reconciliation, positive reintegration and restoration back into their families and community life.

A Boy's Mistake Does Not Have to Become His Identity

Boys who come into conflict with the law can experience stigma, broken family relationships, disrupted education and limited opportunities after release.

At the same time, people who have been harmed deserve to be heard, respected and supported. Our Transformative Justice approach seeks to address both realities.

We work towards accountability, healing and restoration rather than focusing only on punishment.

This means helping boys understand the impact of their actions, supporting dialogue where appropriate, engaging families and communities, and helping boys develop the skills and relationships needed to make different choices.

What We Do

Co-Active Coaching

We visit boys in correctional settings, offering Co-Active coaching, mentorship and life-skills support to help them reflect on their choices and prepare for change.

Family Engagement

We trace and engage families by creating supportive relationships that can help the boys return to a safe stable support network and environment that fosters healing and reconciliation.

Accountability and Reconciliation

Where appropriate and safe, we create opportunities for listening, accountability and reconciliation between boys, families and people affected by harm.

Reintegration and Aftercare

We prepare boys for life beyond correctional settings by connecting them to education, skills, mentorship, family and community support, with continued follow-up.

Supporting Boys and the Communities Around Them

Our Transformative Justice work may involve:

  • Boys in conflict with the law
  • First-time offenders
  • Boys who have been wrongly accused
  • Families
  • People affected by harm
  • Community members
  • Relevant justice and community stakeholders

Our approach recognises that every situation is different and that safety, consent and appropriateness must guide any restorative process.

From Conflict Towards Restoration

Our approach may include:

  • Meeting and listening to the boy
  • Understanding his circumstances and needs
  • Providing coaching and mentorship
  • Tracing and engaging his family
  • Understanding the impact of the harm
  • Where appropriate, engaging people affected by the harm
  • Supporting accountability and reconciliation
  • Preparing for reintegration
  • Connecting the boy to education, skills and positive relationships
  • Providing follow-up and aftercare where possible.

The goal is not to erase accountability but to create opportunities for responsibility, transformation, healing and restoration.

"When I was joining Lifesong Kenya's REAM Program, I didn't know how to operate a computer or design business cards. I also did not know that my complainant would withdraw the charges against me and that I would be free to go home. Lastly, the program helped change my character and the way I look at friendship."
