Imagine a bright young boy named Kibe. Though full of potential, his young life took a devastating turn. At 15 years of age, Kibe’s dream of education got shattered when he had to drop out of school. Without having any form of support, Kibe started living on the streets. There, he endured unimaginable hardship.
Living on the streets exposed Kibe to getting taken advantage of by older street boys. One of the risks was getting involved in petty crime or worse still, getting sick. These challenges culminated in a horrific act of abuse that left Kibe fearing for his life.
But, luckily, Kibe’s story didn’t end in despair.
Thanks to the intervention of a compassionate policewoman, Kibe got rescued. After receiving a call about the rescue, the Lifesong Kenya team picked Kibe up. And for the first time in a long time, Kibe felt safe. He had a place to call home, a warm bed, nourishing meals and clothing. He also got crucial medical and emotional support that enabled him to find his footing.
In addition to this, Kibe got a chance to return to school and a chance to heal from his painful past. ​At the Halfway House, Kibe was offered opportunities to bond and learn from others. He enjoyed hiking on Ngong Hills, game nights and attending church at CITAM Ngong. This new form of freedom and growth ignited a new dream! Kibe rejoined school and sat for his KEPSEA exams and graduated from Grade 6. This was made possible by generous donors and individuals like you.
​Kibe’s dream to study at Strathmore University
Every Saturday, Kibe participates in house chores. After breakfast, he cycles with the Lifesong Kenya team to Osupuko Village. Once there, Kibe joins volunteers and staff in Lifesong Kenya’s weekend Soccer Program. The program is much more than a game. The program uses literacy and life skills to empower 50 other vulnerable boys like Kibe.
What is special about Kibe is his ability and eagerness to get involved. Every visitor who crosses paths with Kibe has fond things to say about Kibe. Not only is he jovial, he is respectful, responsible and passionate. He often springs into action by helping other vulnerable young boys finish their homework. He also teaches them how to pump air into the balls used in the program.
“I am grateful for being able to have my own bicycle, go on hiking expeditions and engage in game nights. I have never had a bicycle to call my own until I arrived at Lifesong Kenya. It is also great cycling out of the Halfway House to play football with other boys,” Kibe says.
It is evident that Lifesong Kenya is offering a path away from the dangers Kibe once faced. But, there is more!
It was during Strathmore University’s visit that Kibe’s future came into focus. A Strathmore student shared their passion for IT and Cyber Security, and for Kibe, a spark was lit! Now in Grade 7. Kibe is working towards joining Strathmore University to study Cyber Security.
After graduating from university, Kibe dreams of supporting his siblings and his mother. In order for this to happen, Lifesong Kenya needs consistent support to keep Kibe in school. ​You can be the key to unlocking Kibe’s potential and the potential of so many other boys like him.
