Braveheart’s Inspiring Journey of Hope
Braveheart’s story isn’t one of despair, though that is where it all begins. It is a story of resilience, the power of community support and how hope can bloom even in the darkest of places. When 17-year-old Braveheart arrived at our Halfway House early this year, he was a shadow of himself. Broken by stigma and trauma, he felt hopeless, and utterly lost. His future seemed as bleak as the night he walked through the doors of our Halfway House for boys in crisis. Society had written him off, and in his own eyes, he was good for nothing.
Braveheart’s journey had taken a devastating turn right from the word go. Not knowing his biological parents, an old woman in the village took him in. But, school fees was always elusive. With no help at hand, Braveheart had no option but to drop out of school. After dropping out of high school, he got a job as a herdsman.
One day, a friend called him, promising a well-paying job in construction. His heart beating in anticipation for a better life, Braveheart embarked on a journey of hope. But the promise was a mirage. His friend, struggling himself, couldn’t deliver. Braveheart’s dreams of a better life in the city quickly crumbled. Food was hard to come by while he had to fight for a sleeping space at night.
The night that changed everything
Then came the night that changed everything. A well dressed and polished man came into Braveheart’s life. For a young man who had grown up without a father, this was a dream come true. He finally had found a father-figure! The promised Braveheart a good job, food, decent clothing, shoes and shelter.
“I feel dirty and helpless,” he said after arriving at our Halfway House. “I will never trust a man again!” he added, his eyes clouding with pain and shame.
Lured by the promise of a better life he had always dreamt of, Braveheart fell prey to a predator. The man’s horrific attempt to sexually abuse him shattered his trust and left him reeling. It was a moment of utter vulnerability, a point where many would have given up.
“I feel dirty and helpless,” he said after arriving at our Halfway House. “I will never trust a man again!” he added, his eyes clouding with pain and shame.
But fate intervened. As the man went to the toilet, Braveheart quickly jumped out of the bed he was lying on. He dashed to the door and ran for his life! A good Samaritan, recognizing Braveheart’s distress, took him to an MSF facility. And from there, a social worker referred him to our Halfway House.
Thanks to a grant we had received from the Merck Family Foundation, our Halfway House was able to take him in. At first, Braveheart was withdrawn and showed no interest. But, amidst the warmth and communal support, Braveheart’s healing began.
We provided housing, food, medication, clothing, and the opportunity to continue his education. We also offered him something that is far more profound: a safe space to rebuild his life.
And rebuild he has. Braveheart’s transformation has been remarkable. At school, he has found his footing and a glimmer of hope. He has joined the journalism club where he is nurturing his dream of becoming a journalist. He has discovered a voice he thought he had lost, a voice that is eager to share his experiences and inspire others.
Giving back during school holiday

During school holidays in April, August and December, Braveheart’s energy and enthusiasm is infectious. He is part of our Halfway House community where he is an active participant. Apart from feeding chicken, he is helping with house chores and other activities. To advance his skills. Braveheart is learning coding and embracing technology as a tool for his future.
Because we are a community of cyclists, Braveheart has taken to cycling. He is learning how to fix and repair bicycles. He even cycles with us to Osupuko Village where our team runs our literacy and football training. Braveheart is not just receiving support and sitting by. He is giving back, contributing and becoming a beacon of hope for others.
Braveheart’s journey of hope is a reminder that even when life knocks us down, we have the capacity to rise again. We all have the capacity to bounce back, more stronger than ever. It is a testament to the power of compassion, the importance of safe spaces, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit.
Braveheart is no longer the broken and hopeless young man who arrived at our doorstep. He is an exceptional young man with dreams, a future and a powerful story to tell. And we, at the Halfway House, are incredibly proud to be a part of his journey.
